Welcome to De Appelsche

Richard and Lycke

We are Richard and Lycke. Since 2022 we have been building our small farm in Fochteloo, just outside the village of Appelscha in the north of the Netherlands. Our guests sleep in spacious lodge tents among the meadows, the animals live around the corner and the forest starts almost at the gate. We farm on a small scale, nature-inclusive and without artificial fertiliser or pesticides.

Everything on this page is written in English so you know exactly what to expect. Questions? Write to us in English or German, we are happy to help.

Life on the farm

Children feeding the farm animals

Every morning between 8:30 and 9:30 Lycke feeds the animals and children are welcome to help: collecting eggs, brushing the ponies, giving the donkeys a carrot. Our animals: three donkeys, four Shetland ponies, a Tinker horse, goats, two pigs, chickens and a rabbit.

For guests, the petting farm and playground are open from 8:00 to 22:00: air trampoline, go-karts, a pedal tractor track, water play at the pump and a sandpit. On Saturdays we bake pizza in our wood-fired oven, and in the evening there is the campfire.

Farm shop and tea room

Our farm shop sells our own produce plus products from more than 30 local suppliers and producers: vegetables, fruit, beer, juice, cheese, nuts, meat, ice cream, dairy, milk, eggs, honey, jam and much more. The self-service point next to the shop is open 24/7 for basic groceries.

In the tea room you can have breakfast (€ 45 per tent, 8:00 to 9:30), coffee, tea, homemade cake and ice cream. On rainy days it is the cosiest spot on the farm.
